PHPMyAdmin includes a setup utility that allows you to easily configure a multitude of servers and various server and installation specific options. Typically, this can be reached by adding /setup to the end. For new users, it might not be completely easy but it sure provides access and information about a great deal of the configuration options. You will need a writable /config directory in the base of your phpMyAdmin installation while setting up, then it should walk you through the rest.
